Parliamentary support for our campaign
Early day motions have been lodged in both Holyrood and Westminster in support of our campaign.
In the Scottish Parliament:
S3M-3389 Malcolm Chisholm: North Edinburgh Fuel Poverty Action Group—
That the Parliament welcomes the launch of the campaign by North Edinburgh Fuel Poverty Action Group (NEFPAG), supported by North Edinburgh Trust, calling for an end to the unjust practice by energy suppliers of charging customers using prepayment meters (PPM) more for their gas and electricity than customers paying by direct debit or online; notes that in north Edinburgh a PPM user can pay up to £340 more each year than a customer using other payment methods, and calls on all suppliers to take notice of the NEFPAG campaign and reduce the prices paid by PPM customers to those paid by direct debit customers or lower.
In Westminster:
EDM 691 North Edinburgh Fuel Poverty Action Group's campaign on pre-payment meters
That this House welcomes the launch of the campaign by North Edinburgh Fuel Poverty Action Group calling for an end to the excessive prices paid for gas and electricity by pre-payment meter users; notes that pre-payment meters are used predominantly by consumers on low and fixed incomes; believes it is unacceptable that a pre-payment meter user can pay up to £340 more each year than a customer using an online payment method; recognises this is an issue for low-income households across the United Kingdom; calls on Ofgem to bring forward regulations at the earliest opportunity to end these punitive charges on the poorest in society; and further believes that if Ofgem fails to act the Government should introduce legislation to address the issue.
